Overview

Tap, Track, Win! is a marketing initiative under the MAE app by Maybank that encourages users to increase Scan & Pay usage through cashback and rewards.

Users can opt in to the programme and earn cashback by completing selected actions and transactions.

I focused on designing a clear and engaging experience that allows users to understand how to earn rewards, track their progress, and maximise cashback without confusion or friction.

For this project, I collaborated closely with the Product Manager, UX Writer, Design Manager, Marketing team and the engineers.

Problems

Despite offering attractive rewards, the experience needed clearer structure and visibility to support user participation.

Unclear reward mechanics

Users may not immediately understand how cashback is earned through Scan & Pay or which actions are required to qualify.

Lack of progress tracking

Daily check-ins reset monthly, but without clear tracking, users could lose motivation or miss out on completing reward cycles.

Limited visibility of cashback items

Users needed an easy way to identify which transactions or items were eligible for cashback within the programme.

Tap, Track, Win! was designed as a dedicated feature within MAE that clearly communicates reward mechanics while motivating continued engagement.

The experience focuses on transparency, progress visibility, and timely feedback to help users participate confidently and consistently.

By simplifying how rewards are earned and tracked, the feature turns everyday transactions into a more engaging and rewarding experience.

Core Features

Scan & pay cashback

Users can earn cashback of up to RM15 by using Scan & Pay for eligible transactions. The feature clearly highlights cashback eligibility, reinforcing Scan & Pay as a rewarding payment method.

Daily check-in rewards

Users earn additional rewards by checking in daily on the MAE app. Completing check-ins for 7 days within a month unlocks extra cashback, with progress clearly displayed and reset on the first day of each month.

Cashback items tracking

Users can easily view selected items and transactions that offer cashback. This helps users make informed spending decisions and avoid missing eligible rewards.

Outcomes

Tap, Track, Win! improves user engagement by making rewards more visible and achievable. Users clearly understand how to earn cashback and rewards, progress tracking encourages repeat check-ins and consistent participation, and cashback-eligible items are easier to identify.

Overall, the feature increases participation while making reward earning feel simple and rewarding.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how gamification and transparency can be combined to drive user engagement in financial apps.

While cashback campaigns are common, their effectiveness depends on how clearly users understand and track their progress.

By designing Tap, Track, Win! as a structured and trackable experience, the feature transforms rewards from a passive promotion into an active habit.
